KEDS Academy Official Opening14 Feb 2014
On the 14th of February, in a ceremony organized by the Kosovo Electricity Distribution and Supply Company, KEDS Academy is officially declared open. Tens of students, representatives of the Kosovo government, representatives of the international community and the prestigious companies - Limak and Calik from Turkey, representatives of the Public University of Prishtina “Hasan Prishtina” and other bearers of the higher education institutions in Kosovo, representatives of Bogazici University from Turkey and civil society representatives were present at the opening.
In an opening speech, Mr. Vedi Yesilkilic, the General Director of KEDS briefly explained about the Academy and its goals. According to Mr. Yesilkilic, KEDS Academy represents KEDS's initiative into the effective solution of the problems that talented students have in Kosovo. The participants shall engage in a lecture program offered by the Bogazici University through its Lifelong Learning Center and KEDS’s experts. Upon the completion of the lecture program the students shall be given the chance to attend an internship program at KEDS and finally, they will be offered a temporary or permanent employment at KEDS or at any other similar institution.
The Academy is a joint partnership between KEDS, Bogazici University in Turkey, known to be one of the top 200 universities in the world, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Kosovo. Moreover, the Academy was established with an ongoing support by the Public University of Prishtina “Hasan Prishtina” through its Faculty of Electrical Engineering.
In the first year, the Academy will be hosting 50 students, 20 of which come from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering while the other thirty come from two technical secondary schools in the Prishtina region.
After a brief explanation on the inherited situation of the distribution and the supply network in the Republic of Kosovo, Mr. Yesilkilic showed his belief that the involvement of the younger generations will be of high importance towards a better future.
“We believe the younger generations, with the acquired knowledge at their respective universities and secondary schools, and with the added values from our training programs, will catalyze the process of solving these issues and will be our most valuable asset in increasing the quality of the electricity, in electrifying all parts of Kosovo, decreasing losses and offering good quality services to the source of our energy, the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo.”, explained Mr. Yesilkilic.
The speech was followed by a speech from Mr. Mesut Serhat Dinc, Board Member of the Kosovo Electricity Distribution and Supply Company. Mr. Dinc used the chance to thank all the project partners for their continuous support in the well-going of the project and explained that except the stated goal, which is to build the academic and professional capacities of the young talents from Kosovo, the Academy will also serve as a platform that will increase the academic cooperation between Kosovo and Turkey.
“Our Academy shall also serve as a platform for academic exchange between Turkey and Kosovo with the goal of exchanging know-how and thus promoting reciprocal academic contribution to further advancement of academic programs and the further development of the academic staff.”, stated Mr. Dinc in his welcome speech.
The welcome speech of Mr. Dinc was followed by a speech from the Senior Political Advisor to the Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. Drita Kadriu and the Director of the Bogazici University Lifelong Learning Centre, Prof. dr. Tamer Atabarut without the cooperation of whom the project would not be possible.
KEDS Academy offers a training program by the experts of KEDS and the Center for Lifelong Learning at the Bogazici University in Turkey, an internship program at KEDS and employment for the participants. KEDS has allocated a total budget of 150,000 Euros for the first year, an amount that might change in the coming years on a need basis. The best students shall also visit the Calik and Limak energy facilities in Turkey. At the end of the program, the students shall receive internationally recognized certificates by the Bogazici University.
